Spring 2012: Done

That’s right, my Spring 2012 semester is done. (Good riddance, really.)

And on my last day of final exams (oh happy day!), I did as any other person would have done. I returned the last of my books to the University library (which took several trips…academic literature is heavier than it looks) and proceeded to my local public library to check out more books for the sole purpose of reading for pleasure, naturally. It’s true. I picked up Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Phantom Tollbooth, In Cuba I Was a German Shepard, and even Kingdom Keepers, among a few other selections. I love my reading time to myself, but I also enjoy reading with my kids. I’ve also been doing a little organizing around the house, quite a bit of pinning on pinterest, I dug through recipes and started back toward building weekly menus, finally figured out spotify, and now I’m going to tinker with photos I’ve had sitting in folders for way too long. I can’t wait to share with you!

For summer, I’ll be taking one class in a short six week term. (I shall submit myself to the rigors of a full schedule once again in the Fall.)

Aside from that, I hope to focus on spending quality time with my boys, taking more photos and hopefully learning new techniques, and going to a few summer shows.

Two Door Cinema Club, anyone? How about St. Vincent? Side note: Thank you awesome artists for making your way down to South FL when others passed us over this summer (Arctic Monkeys, I’m talking to you).

One more thing: I’ll be heading to the local book store this week to catch Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess) promoting her new book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir).

Oh and, don’t forget to catch the supermoon this Saturday night! It should be stellar ;)

View from Tonopah

I’m back from my trip to Nevada and California. What a treat to see Death Valley and get a taste of some real geological field work. One moment that stands out in my mind is a brief conversation I had with Geologists who were in town from New Mexico, doing real work in the area. Real work. Suddenly I could see myself doing real geological work one day as a career, too. As always, school takes precedent over my time here on the blog and with classes started up again, I expect that I’ll be sharing my pictures from the trip (and those promised from my trip to Disney, too) in bits and pieces. Here’s a quick shot from a stop we made to occupy some time when we spent a day in Tonopah, NV.

As a side note, I’m slightly bummed that I was too tired and too busy working on my field notebook to enjoy the night sky since Tonopah is a #1 destination for stargazing. Which means I’ll have to make my way back there sometime in the future. :)

Ghirardelli Milk and Truffle Squares

This weekend, I learned that Ghirardelli Milk and Truffle chocolate squares make for awesome study snacks. I’m a picky eater, and even more picky when it comes to one of my most loved indulgences: chocolate. But these are so good. Smooth chocolate-truffle perfection. I snack healthy overall, but a chocolate this good makes for just the right treat.

I recently received a sample bag of Ghirardelli’s new Milk and Truffle Squares from SheSpeaks, and wanted to share how much I enjoyed them.

The Secret World of Arrietty

I’ve set a date night! With my kids! Okay, that sounds a bit funny. But I’m sure that whether you work, stay home, or do a mixture of both, you understand the need for some quality time with the children. I’ve been so busy studying that I feel like the little bit of time I spend with my sons is just not enough.

My 7 year old son has been doing so well in school (he made honor roll!) that I think a reward and some time doing something of his choosing is just the thing to have a little fun together. Since he’s a big fan of “Ponyo” and “Spirited Away,” he’s really excited about “The Secret World of Arrietty” and I’ve set a date to watch it opening weekend!

It opens in theaters everywhere on February 17th, and while my son knows I want to watch it with him, I think I’m going to keep the outing a surprise until the day of.

If you aren’t already familiar, the movie is based on the children’s book series, “The Borrowers.” While it is an animated movie for children, I’ve found movies such as “Spirited Away” captured my interest throughout, so I really am looking forward to another film from the Studio Ghibli. It seems the voice actors have been well casted, too.

I hope you’re managing to balance the fun and work in your life, too! Maybe you’ll head to the movies as a treat to your little ones to watch, too? I’ve included the following SWOA_Activity_Sheets for fun meanwhile!
